Design/Field Services:

We are committed to client-focused services that are passed on to the team providing personal involvement, from budget preparation to design programming and implementation of the final electrical systems. Sustainable construction in lighting systems, emergency power generation, fire protection, security and life safety systems, and data cabling/communications systems and inherent responsibilities are formulated to allow SMP to achieve client goals. SMP Engineering staff are LEED accredited and proficient in AutoCAD and Revit. SMP Field services include contract administration, commissioning and system verification and preventative maintenance consulting.

SMP understands the needs and requirements of Mixed Use and Office/Retail Facilities. Our design approach enables us to work closely with the Owners to fully understand and develop the design to meet the requirements of the project. We engage with clients to fully understand the needs of the tenants to allow for added flexibility in the future to allow the Owner to re-purpose the spaces as required.

SMP understands the needs and requirements of residential facilities. Our design will meet the requirements of the project and also comply with all applicable codes and established best practices. We engage w clients to fully understand the needs of the residents within the residences and ensure that there is a vast amount of flexibility within the suites to ensure that the Owner can re-purpose the suites as required for various residents. SMP has also designed many student housing projects on various University campuses across Western Canada.

SMP Engineering’s extensive knowledge and experience with hospitals and healthcare on previous projects, along with our widespread technical knowledge and production capacity allows us to design electrical systems for high quality facilities.

We have had the benefit and gained knowledge of the unique and special requirements that apply to Hospital and Healthcare Facilities. Having worked on healthcare projects exceeding $2.2 billion over the last decade, the firm has an excellent understanding of building standards and requirements for these types of facilities. SMP has been instrumental in assisting the Health Regions and Private Health Care Providers in understanding and developing solutions for various challenging and unique situations in existing facilities.

SMP understands the needs and requirements of recreational facilities including lighting layouts and important lighting levels required for various sporting events and HD broadcast and associated sound systems to suit. Our design will meet the requirements of the project and also comply with all applicable codes and established best practices. We provide you with the support required in all stages of the project, from design to completion of construction, and respect your budget and schedules at all times.

Our involvement in technically challenging projects has given SMP an opportunity to involve specialists utilizing 3D modeling such as Revit, and with certification as Lighting Consultants (LC), design of data/voice communication systems (RCDD; Registered Communications Distribution Designer), LEED© sustainability, and security systems (CPTED certified; Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design).

Since 2008, SMP Engineering’s experience participating in BIM projects has become as diverse as its overall project experience. To date, the BIM projects we have been involved in range from 5,000 square foot municipal facilities to 1,000,000+ square foot commercial buildings. The BIM requirements for these projects has varied from the process being used as a design coordination tool only, to providing construction modeling services to electrical contractors. Equally as varied are the methods of collaboration implemented, we have been involved in projects that required a typical weekly distribution of models among the design team, to more integrated projects sharing one server, and in some cases one multidiscipline model.

Our goal is that every team member can confidently participate both BIM projects as well as those that require a more traditional workflow. To support these team members and projects, we have a dedicated team of individuals representing each of the markets in which we are currently located who contribute to our corporate BIM standards & strategy. This depth of knowledge and experience allows us to continually exceed our clients’ BIM expectations regardless of requirements.

SMP uses the current Autodesk Building Design suite of products as Revit and Navisworks are typically mandated as the design authoring and review software used in the BIM process. We also use several purpose built 3rd party tools to aid in our workflow.

SMP’s communication designers are intimately familiar with the EIA/TIA standards and are active members of BICSI, a Telecommunications Association. BICSI works closely with EIA/TIA, a set of recognized telecommunications standards used throughout North America. Through continuous monitoring, our designers keep themselves apprised of any revisions and/or additions to these standards. Our communications design team currently includes two Registered Communications Distribution Designers (RCDD), adding significant expertise and credibility to the group. Working with industry leaders and team personnel, SMP will assist the overall team in developing a flexible, practical, effective communication structure. Areas to be considered include:

  • Fibre optics and copper to accommodate users' needs and control
  • Adequate raceways to accommodate future needs
  • Cable identification systems
  • Structured cabling systems

SMP has worked on over 300 various projects in the last year alone that involve a fire alarm component to the design and construction of the facility. These projects encompass a wide range of building types including commercial, residential, retail, healthcare, institutional, recreational, and industrial buildings varying from small renovations to large complex campus size projects.

Specifically, we provide services that include: complete fire alarm system engineering services from conceptual to detailed engineering and construction documents, construction observation, final verification acceptance testing, tendering and bid evaluations, existing systems evaluations, code reviews, and local authority approvals.

We consider ourselves leaders in fire alarm systems design and verification. Our professional employees are active in the development of codes and standards and continually stay abreast of the latest code changes and technology. Our construction administration staffs are proficient in installation methods and are a valuable asset in assisting with on-site issues.

With more than 20 projects of historic significance, SMP most recently provided electrical engineering services for the Bar U Ranch, including the 2005-2006 restoration of the Cookhouse. Committed to retaining the character of the original facility, the lighting team did extensive research to provide historically accurate design solutions including fixtures for the c. 1940’s building. SMP was electrical engineer for the $70 million renovations completed at the Banff Springs Hotel in 2004, which included a new Grand Entry and VIP Entry and renovations and additions to the retail spaces. Additional experience includes The Empress Hotel in Victoria, the Kananasksis Visitor Centre (2007) and the Lake Louise Visitor Centre (2005).

When no "off the shelf" fixtures were available to suit, SMP’s in-house lighting design team created the design of over 20 historically correct lighting fixtures for the recent entry pavilion redevelopment at the Banff Springs Hotel. Of particular note was the successful utilization of energy efficient PL lamp technology within many of the fixtures with little or no colour temperature variation between differently lighted spaces. For added lamp life and energy efficiency, all the incandescent lamps were designed to be operated at 90% of rated voltage. This one adjustment in the design has increased the life expectancy of incandescent lamps by four-fold, heavily decreasing the operational costs.

SMP Engineering recognizes the necessity to retain the heritage, culture, and natural values of a historic site, while also balancing the requirements to bring new technology and infrastructure to a building. Utilizing our past project involvement with heritage sites, SMP will assist in renovating and updating requirements set forth by the client.

We are committed to retaining the character of the original facilities, while providing historically accurate design solutions, and incorporating new technology to complement the site.

In our industry, innovation is a unique combination of culture, resources, creativity and capabilities. Innovation requires an avoidance of group thinking, to the point of taking a contrarian philosophy, not necessarily disagreeing with the “status quo”, but reviewing issues from a different logical perspective. Initially, our approach is to become more involved in the industry by attending various symposiums and conferences, participating in appropriate committees, and developing our own network of electrical colleagues. Visitation of various sites will help stir the creative aspect of our efforts. Innovation is not always a guarantee of success, so any ideas will be carefully reviewed and reviewed again, to ensure the implementation will result in success.

Any other innovative news or upcoming technological advances outside our sector will be brought to the team for their comments and perusal.

SMP takes our responsibility for sustainable practices seriously. Even when following guidelines outlined by established sustainable rating systems such as LEED® and Green Globes, the best design solution isn’t usually immediately identifiable. Using an integrated design process, with access to technological advances, each project has an opportunity to excel at sustainability, both in the process of design and in the final built project.

As pioneers in sustainable design within Alberta, our innovative approach and strong background has allowed us to achieve LEED® certification on numerous projects. Minimum energy performance, optimization of energy performance and controllability of systems will be closely monitored by team members. Proven "green" technologies and practices will be investigated. If financially viable and acceptable, these initiatives will be incorporated in the design.

SMP Engineering’s certified Lighting Consultants (LC) offer state-of-the-art services through the understanding and application of light production and distribution principles, and both the physical and psychological nature of light perception.

While creating an aesthetically appealing environment through illumination is a rewarding achievement, our experts do so through the application of scientific principles. Spaces are carefully analyzed through a series of tasks including calculating function and technical requirements. Lighting modeling for interior and exterior spaces allows our designers to investigate the outcomes of lighting options in the earliest design phases, not only optimizing the uniformity and quality of lighting and operating costs, but maximizing the symmetry between architectural design intent and the lit environment.

With today’s focus on green design and energy efficiency, lighting design and its role in a project’s sustainability is becoming more and more prominent. SMP’s lighting designers, like craftsmen, have a variety of tools to utilize to hone their craft and reduce its environmental footprint. Using tools such as daylighting studies and lighting modeling, lighting efficiency and control becomes a key component of the overall design strategy. As a result, our designers are able to maximize every opportunity to apply sustainable design principles, meeting or exceeding LEED®/ASHRAE 90.1 energy efficiency guidelines.

Security systems engineering is one of the many specialized consultant disciplines offered by SMP Engineering. We offer representation by a trained and certified safety/security expert with over ten years of direct, hands on experience designing, implementing and commissioning some of the most sophisticated integrated security systems installed in Canada.

Our active participation in the Security industry includes employing CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) qualified personnel, CPP (Certified Protection Professional) training via active membership in ASIS, and manufacturer certification training on all popular brands of security products.

Services include concept development, risk/threat analysis, design & budget formulation, site installation monitoring/assessment & verification, and design/assessment review of security and safety processes, procedures and privacy issues.

SMP utilizes the latest software to provide Building Information Modeling (BIM) to assist the client/contractor’s understanding of the project. The firm has adopted BIM using Revit as our authoring software and Navisworks as our model review software. We have completed numerous models and have several more in progress. These models have range in integration from single constructability models created purely for electrical contractors to fully integrated models with all parties within the design team contributing. SMP believes that BIM implementation within our firm has afforded us the ability to coordinate with the entire project team more effectively. Electrically, this benefit is realized when it comes to coordination of large electrical systems with other disciplines; for example: incoming electrical service equipment & panel board locations, large conduit & cable tray layouts and lighting fixture locations.

SMP lighting specialists are familiar with AGi32 software, an extensive computer rendering software for lighting modelling. AGi32 performs detailed lighting analysis using photometrically accurate data for lighting fixtures to create three-dimensional renderings, allowing the design team and owner to visually appreciate the effects of a specific lighting system prior to its construction; this also provides an opportunity to adjust the lighting system prior to tendering. Our lighting database, presently comprised of 18,000 lighting fixture files, is constantly upgraded to permit flexibility during the selection of fixtures. The use of this technique enables the project team to better relate to two dimensional drawings in a three dimensional perspective. Services include: lighting design using lighting modelling software (AGi32), design complies with LEED/ ASHRAE 90.1 energy efficiency guidelines, daylighting and associated low voltage lighting control systems, and site lighting.

We also have a wide array of technical codes and standards to ensure our designs comply with federal, provincial and local authorities having jurisdiction legal requirements and engineering best practices.

All plotting is produced in-house; SMP has two plotters and one scanner onsite to allow us to respond to our client’s needs in a timely fashion.
