SMP Engineering designed electrical systems for Calgary's Genesis Centre, featuring diverse sports facilities, event spaces, library, and YMCA with focus on youth accessibility and community engagement.
The Genesis Centre includes two indoor field houses (which can be converted into special event spaces), two outdoor soccer fields, a gymnasium/event hall (oversized), a multi-purpose room (dividable), meeting rooms, and a community kitchen. The facility also encompasses a community and human services area, a branch of the Calgary Public Library, and a YMCA with the following amenities: swimming pool, training pool, on-deck hot tub, fitness and strength workout areas, a running/walking track, gymnasium, climbing wall, fitness studios, quiet room, and steam rooms.
Key issues during design were accessibility and relevance to a large youth population. The Saddletowne branch of the Calgary Public Library is designed to be able to operate independently of the mixed-use facility.
