One of the most meaningful parts of our work is the opportunity to help shape the city we call home: Calgary.

As a locally rooted engineering firm, we do not view public infrastructure projects as simply another sector of business.

They are the arenas our children play in, the roads we drive on, the libraries our families visit, the emergency facilities that protect our communities, and the public spaces that define how our city grows. For many years, SMP has had the privilege of contributing to a wide range of capital projects for City of Calgary. Through these experiences, we have developed a strong appreciation for the City’s vision, processes, and commitment to building a resilient and vibrant future. We are proud to be a trusted partner in helping deliver that vision.

Municipal infrastructure carries a responsibility beyond bricks and mortar. Public projects must balance performance, durability, sustainability, accessibility, budget accountability, and long-term community value. They must serve thousands of people over decades while responding to the changing needs of a growing city. That responsibility is something we deeply respect. At SMP, we understand that when working on City of Calgary projects, every decision matters. Electrical systems need to be dependable, maintainable, and energy efficient. Spaces need to function for staff, users, and the public. We are highly conscious and connected to construction budgets, publicly communicated timelines, and community expectations of the assets.

Our involvement with the City spans many of the infrastructure categories across multiple decades that are most important to residents. We have been fortunate to contribute to recreation and sport-related facilities that support active living across Calgary. These projects require purpose designed systems, from lighting and controls to emergency power, technology integration, and energy-conscious design. We understand how these facilities operate because we use them too as parents, athletes, and community members.

We have also supported facilities tied to emergency services and public safety, where reliability and resilience are paramount. Fire halls, multiservice buildings, operations centres, and related facilities must remain functional when communities need them most. These projects demand robust backup power systems, operational continuity, security integration, and maintainable infrastructure. They are the type of projects where engineering directly supports public safety, and we approach them with that seriousness.

Calgary’s arts and culture facilities are equally important to the identity of our city. Historical city buildings, galleries, performance venues, and community gathering spaces require a balance between technical performance and architectural vision. Lighting quality, user experience, flexibility, and discreet systems integration all play a role. We value the opportunity to support projects that celebrate creativity and community life, knowing these are often the places where lasting memories are made.

Public libraries are another significant part of the civic landscape we are proud to support. Libraries remain places for learning, gathering, technology access, and inclusion. Modern library facilities require adaptable infrastructure that supports evolving uses, digital connectivity, security, lighting comfort, and welcoming environments. These spaces continue to be some of the most valuable community assets in any city.

What makes SMP uniquely positioned for City of Calgary work is not only our technical capability, but our understanding of the City’s processes, standards, approval pathways, sustainability priorities, and operational expectations. Through years of experience, we have built familiarity that creates real value for projects and project teams. It allows us to anticipate challenges early, coordinate efficiently with stakeholders, and design solutions that align with municipal expectations from the outset.

Just as importantly, we bring local perspective. We understand Calgary’s climate, growth patterns, operational realities, and community priorities because we experience them ourselves. Our team is invested in outcomes not only as engineers, but as Calgarians. There is something especially rewarding about driving past a completed facility and knowing our team played a role in bringing it to life. Whether it is a recreation centre full of families, a fire hall ready to respond, a library serving the community, or infrastructure that keeps the city moving, those moments remind us why this work matters.

At SMP Engineering, we are grateful for the trust placed in us to help deliver public projects that serve our city. We value the partnerships we have built with the City of Calgary, project teams, and community stakeholders along the way. Calgary continues to evolve, and we are proud to contribute to the infrastructure that supports its future. Building our home city is work we never take for granted.
