SMP Engineering provided electrical and lighting design for the Roozen Family Hospice Centre in Edmonton, featuring residential suites, integrated care spaces, and a central atrium, with a focus on creating a comforting environment.
Located in a residential neighbourhood in west Edmonton, the 29,400 ft2 hospice is designed over two above-grade floors. The first floor is home to residential suites with integrated care spaces and garden views, as well as a central atrium that will serve as a social hub for the hospice; the second floor houses dining and family-style kitchen spaces, amenity areas, and administrative and staff spaces.
SMP’s scope of work for the project included power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, life safety systems, communication and data systems, and CSA Z32 testing of receptacles located in patient care environments.
In addition to the basic lighting design, our in-house architectural lighting studio, lightSPACE, provided architectural lighting consulting to assist in creating a warm and comforting environment for the suites and amenity areas of the hospice. Providing lighting that is bright, glare-free, uniform, and has more of a residential feel rather than an institutional feel can greatly ease the mental and physical health of residents.
