SMP Engineering designed electrical systems for Calgary's world-class Brookfield Residential YMCA, featuring diverse aquatic facilities, ice rinks, fitness areas, and a library with LEED Gold certification.
The largest facility operated by the YMCA in the world, at 330,000 ft², this YMCA provides recreational, leisure, and cultural amenities, as well as competitive sport features. The main floor includes a 10-lane competition lap pool, a leisure pool, a dive tower, two water slides, a lazy river, a whirlpool, a surf simulator (Flowrider), a steam room, change rooms, multi-purpose rooms, and gymnasium courts. Additionally, the main floor encompasses twin NHL-size ice rinks with spectator seating, arena dressing rooms, a running track, a fitness area/studios, a daycare/child minding development centre, offices, food services, a youth centre, a theatre, and a physiotherapy/medical clinic. It also includes a full-service, 23,000 ft2 Calgary Public Library branch. An Alouette III helicopter (on loan from the Hangar Flight Museum) is showcased within the library’s interactive Early Learning Centre. The upper floor viewing areas are open to the main floor amenities and a mezzanine bridge, art studios, and multi-purpose rooms. This project achieved LEED Gold certification.
