SMP Engineering designed energy-efficient systems for Calgary's LEED Gold Remington YMCA, featuring pools, gymnasium, library, and innovative cogeneration technology for sustainable community recreation.
Situated in the southeast neighbourhood of Quarry Park, this 100,000 ft² recreation centre is packed with amenities, housing a Calgary Public Library, a recreation pool, a lap pool, a full-size gymnasium, and many fitness classrooms. Having achieved LEED Gold certification, this facility incorporated a cogeneration system that converts excess heat into electricity. LED lighting and controls were utilized to create warm and inviting spaces while minimizing energy use. The power usage of this recreation centre is monitored so that the building operators can track consumption and manage it; this means that the facility’s energy use will improve with age.
