SMP Engineering designed comfortable, non-institutional spaces for Burnaby Hospital's expanded Emergency Department, featuring dedicated Mental Health and Substance Use areas and outpatient services.
Completed in early 2020, the $9.3M expansion to the Emergency Department of the Burnaby Hospital included a dedicated space for the Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) department to treat patients. SMP was instrumental in creating a final product that felt comfortable, non-stressful, and not too “institutional,” with the goal of creating a better patient experience. In addition, a new Community Health Services area was added for outpatient services, including nine bed treatment bays, nine recliner treatment bays, two isolation treatment rooms, and a procedure room.
