University of Alberta's Central Academic Building (CAB) Food Hall revitalization, completed in 2019, transformed the space with a social staircase, varied lighting, and comfortable seating, creating a welcoming oasis for students to gather, eat, and study.

The main objective of the second phase of the $1.8M Central Academic Building (CAB) renewal at the University of Alberta was to rejuvenate the space and establish it as the central hub for students on campus. This phase included upgrades to the main floor, building maintenance, and integration with food service vendors.

Phase 2 focused on the first portion of the main floor renewal, with electrical design elements encompassing modifications to power distribution and branch circuitry, substantial lighting and lighting control upgrades, fire alarm system improvements, and auxiliary systems, such as voice/data coordination with furniture and architectural elements.

Lighting throughout the space was designed to create a warm, inviting atmosphere while highlighting and enhancing architectural features. The lighting aesthetic drew inspiration from Phase 1, which involved the lower-floor Food Hall refresh. All light sources used LED technology, and the lighting controls were an extension of the Lutron wireless system installed during Phase 1.

A key consideration for the power distribution system was its ability to accommodate both current and future tenant equipment needs. The system was expanded to include numerous power outlet locations throughout the space. Additionally, existing electrical distribution equipment was replaced and relocated to handle the increased electrical loads from Phase 2 and to allow for future expansion in subsequent phases.
