SMP Engineering enhanced Calgary's Downtown Flood Barrier with innovative lighting design, integrating public art and creating vibrant pathways for recreation and resilience.
Located on the riverfront between West Eau Claire Park and Eau Claire Promenade, the design for the $36.6M Downtown Flood Barrier project focuses on strengthening the city’s pathways network, providing improved recreation areas and integrating public art into the riverfront pathway system. The lighting design for the pathways provides rhythmic pools of light and shadow that highlight pathway connection points while leaving dimmer space for quiet respite. We also utilized low-level luminaires to softly wash the delta garden pathways, emphasizing “The City Unseen” public artwork embedded in the concrete.
