Renovating the Student's Union Building's Myer Horowitz Theatre for a high-caliber, high-volume space. Includes new lighting, A/V systems, and a photovoltaic (solar) system.
This $13M project at the University of Alberta involved transforming the existing Student’s Union Building into a state-of-the-art theatre space, catering to the needs of a dynamic campus environment. The renovation of the Myer Horowitz Theatre included updates to the stage, seating area, and essential back-of-house support areas, complemented by a reimagined multi-level lobby designed to host a variety of events, from community gatherings to private rentals.
SMP’s scope encompassed the design and implementation of new architectural and house lighting, integration of electrical systems for advanced theatrical lighting and A/V, as well as enhanced security and access controls. Our team also upgraded fire alarm and life safety systems, improved power and data infrastructure, and integrated a roof-mounted and façade photovoltaic (solar) system. This project showcases our expertise in revitalizing institutional spaces, blending modern design with functionality to create a welcoming environment for students, faculty, and the broader community.

I have had the pleasure of working with SMP both directly and indirectly, and my experience has consistently been very positive. I have always been impressed with the level of service, technical expertise, and depth of knowledge they bring to their work. What stands out most is the genuine care and attention they put into their designs, ensuring that solutions are thoughtful, practical, and aligned with project needs. SMP has consistently demonstrated professionalism, strong understanding, and a commitment to delivering quality outcomes
