NAIT's Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC), a 17,650 m² LEED Gold certified facility, features advanced manufacturing labs, acceleration spaces, and a 250-person lecture theater, designed by SMP Engineering for energy efficiency and minimal operating costs.
The Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC) at NAIT's campus is a 17,650 m² applied research and teaching facility. It includes advanced manufacturing and testing labs, acceleration spaces for small- and medium-sized businesses, a 250-person multi-purpose lecture theatre, classrooms, collaboration spaces, and offices for administrative and industry partners.
NAIT, one of Canada’s largest polytechnic institutes, serves over 80,000 registrants annually, offering education in advanced technologies, business, skilled trades, and allied health across Alberta, nationally, and internationally.
The PIC was designed with sustainable technologies, creating a highly efficient and adaptable building intended to serve generations to come.
As the Electrical Engineering sub-consultant, SMP contributed to the design of power distribution and emergency power systems, low-tension systems (including data, telephone, and emergency call systems), audiovisual systems, CCTV, access control, clock, and fire alarm systems, as well as the photovoltaic schematic design.
SMP also played a key role in the design’s sustainability focus, addressing energy efficiency, controllability, and commissioning. The project aimed to deliver an energy-efficient building with minimal operating costs, all within the available budget.
