The project consisted of the design and construction of a new 17,550 ft2, three-bay fire station to replace the original building, which was built in 1957. The entire facility is backed up with a bi-fuel generator, and specialized electrical systems included fire fighter notification and vehicle de-icing systems.
One of the prominent features of the Windsor Park Fire Station is a massive stainless-steel fence designed with cut-outs to mimic flames. This fence runs the entire length of the building and is visible from Macleod Trail. SMP was tasked with illuminating this piece of art. Due to property lines and site conditions, it was not possible to mount exterior luminaires to the fence; thus, SMP coordinated with the artist and installer to resolve how to mount the luminaires to the support structure behind each of the 500-lb. steel panels the fence is comprised of. The end result is no luminaires are visible at all; however, during the evening, the tiles behind the fence are illuminated, bringing life to the flame pattern in the fence.
