Delivered through an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, the $98M rehabilitation of the 522,000 ft² multi-use building includes major upgrades to the electrical systems and the addition of a 5MW rooftop solar array—one of the largest urban solar arrays in Canada. The solar installation, featuring 5,754 panels across 193,735.5 ft² above Halls D through H of the Expo Centre, is expected to generate approximately 2,743 kilowatts of power. Despite the challenges, including maintaining full operational capacity during construction, the project continues to transform the Expo Centre. Originally built in 1983 as the Northlands Agricom, the facility has served as a hub for agricultural use and commercial trade shows, with multiple exhibition halls, a sales rink, a mall, and banquet and conference rooms. The electrical upgrades, executed in two phases, include the replacement of outdated systems such as medium voltage feeders, transformers, switchgear, and lighting controls.
To support the City of Edmonton’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2040, several greenhouse gas (GHG) tracking and energy efficiency measures have been integrated into the project. This includes the addition of a 2.4MW rooftop solar system in Phase 1, with plans to install another 2.4MW in future phases. Upon completion, the project will feature the largest rooftop-mounted solar photovoltaic system in Western Canada, setting a new standard for sustainability in urban development.
