Located on the University of Alberta’s North Campus, Thelma Chalifoux Hall is one of the latest additions to the University’s Lister Complex. Added to help the University meet the goal of providing on-campus residences for first-year students, Thelma Chalifoux was named for the first female Métis Senator of both the University of Alberta Senate and the Canadian Senate, a warm and welcoming individual known for her dedication to her community and to younger generations.

The hall occupies 109,000 ft2 and has 426 beds within its five storeys. In addition to the residents’ dorms, the building features fitness spaces, faculty resident suites, a large kitchen and common area, multi-purpose rooms, study rooms, and lounge spaces on all floors. SMP created an electrical design with sustainability in mind, including LED lighting and Wi-Fi coverage throughout the building, along with audio-visual and security systems for the safety of the student residents. Thelma Chalifoux Hall was certified to 3 Green Globes standards in July 2020.

The building is connected to the larger Lister residence complex to help create a sense of community among the students. SMP also worked on renovations to Henday, Kelsey, and MacKenzie towers, as well as the overall community plan for the Lister Complex, to create residences that will serve students for years to come.
